The Rt. Hon. Bertram James Powell, usually referred to as Bertie, (September 21, 1880 - October 4, 1964) was the 9th Prime Minister of Georgeland, serving from April 21, 1937 to June 17, 1938. A Conservative, Powell came to office after the death of his predecessor, James Gray, in 1937. Powell had previously been Minister for External Affairs in Gray's government. Powell was chosen to lead the party after the Treasurer and accepted heir-apparent, Harold Knight, declined, fearing the party's imminent electoral defeat. Knight was correct - at the general election of June 1938, the Conservatives were defeated by the Labour Party, led by Fenton Thomas. Powell resigned as Tory leader but continued as a Member of Parliament until he lost his seat at the 1942 election. He died in 1964.
