The Rt. Hon. Bradford Smith was the 12th Prime Minister of the United Islands of Georgeland. A Conservative, Smith was elected Prime Minister in 1950, defeating the Labour government of Nathan Keegan. Smith's time as PM was relatively brief. Never in the best of health, Smith's physical condition deteriorated rapidly once he became Prime Minister, though it was revealed after his death that he had been suffering from a series of debilitating conditions even during the 1950 election campaign. In 1953 he stubbornly refused to step down but was eventually persuaded to do so in favour of Stanley Baynes. Smith spent the last five years of his life hospitalised. A stroke in 1958 destroyed his ability to speak and rendered him seriously disabled. He died in 1960.
Smith's tenure as Prime Minister is generally regarded as a failure. Little government policy was created, few major pieces of legislation were passed and Smith was hindered by Opposition control of the Senate. In his lifetime Smith was always seen as mild-mannered and weak-willed, especially when compared to his social-climbing wife Emily, who was often referred to as 'domineering' but was a formidable politician in her own right, though she never sought elected office.
