Den Evangelisk Lutherske Frikirke av Kalmarunionen is a Kalmar Union religious community based on Protestant Christianity. Like Den Kalmarunionen Kirke, it is a Lutheran evangelical church but the Free Church has another church system, in which the religious community is directed by its members and is independent of the Union state. It is founded as a split of Den Kalmarunionen Kirke after the Second General Synod of 1961 by liberal bishops led by Gösta Lundström, Bishop of Strängnäs until his dismissal.
The Free Church consists of parishes directed by a parish council in which lay people exercise important functions without the need to be ordained. The highest authority is the Synod of the Free Church, which is headed by a President. Decisions are made by vote. There are more than 1.9 million registered members wich means 5.4% of the population.
Free Church is characterized by its liberalism in liturgical and moral matters. It allows the ordination of women and the blessing of homosexual couples. (Marriage is prohibited by law and is replaced by a "legal union.")
