The Federal District of Georgeland is a federal territory of that nation, an autonomous district in which Topstad, the federal capital, is located. The Federal District is not a state, but since 2016 has been self-governing within Georgeland's federal structure.  The Federal District is roughly analogous in status to the District of Columbia; however, unlike DC, Federal District residents receive representation in the federal parliament. The District receives four Members of the Georgeland House of Commons and two Senators, elected by popular vote.

Government[]

For most of its history, the Federal District was governed by a municipal council and an elected Mayor, with authority over the entire district. The federal government maintained responsibility for the territory's budget, finances and accountability, in much the same manner as a state government would with any city within its territory. From the 1970s, the demand for greater self-government grew, culminating in a 2012 referendum in which residents voted to accept a limited form of self-government, with oversight remaining with the federal government.

The 2014 Federal District Self Government Act abolished the position of Mayor and the local council, effective from the 2016 district election . The district is now governed by a 21-member Legislative Assembly, elected by proportional representation. Like the states and the federal government, a parliamentary system is used to determine the executive. The Head of Government of the Federal District is the district's chief executive. Unlike a state, the District has no governor, with the ceremonial function of appointing a district leadership falling to the federal Minister for Territories.  The current Head of Government is Jennifer Dugdale , who leads a minority Liberal Democratic government.
