The Federative Republic of the Gran Paraguay, commonly shortened to just Gran Paraguay, (Spanish: República Federativa del Gran Paraguay; German: Föderative Republik der Große-Paragueien; Guarani: Tetã'i aty Paraguái'i tuvi) is a sovereign state located in central South America. A significant regional power, Gran Paraguay is considered to be a leading figure of Latin American identity politics and is the headquarters site of many Latin American organisations, most notably the Latin American Development Fund. Gran Paraguay is a composed of 20 provinces and four federal cities. The capital and largest city of the country is Asunción, the metropolitan area of which has a population of some 10 million people, which is nearly a fifth of the total population. This national population was estimated to be about 54 million people as of 2017, making Gran Paraguay the second-most populous Spanish-speaking nation in the world and the 25th most populous overall. Gran Paraguay has a total area of about 1.225 million square kilometres, making it the 23rd largest in the world.
