Edmund Jeffrey Caxton (16 May 1896 - 4 Dec 1977) was a Georgeland academic and jurist who served as the 4th President of Georgeland from 1949 to 1958. A former Justice of the Supreme Court, Caxton was the last president to be directly elected until 2008. Caxton was a proponent of an indirect election system, and his second term was marked by a constitutional referendum held in 1956 which changed the presidential selection method from election to selection by parliament, a system that remained for fifty years. His second term was extended by a year by parliament, who chose Arthur Brittan to succeed him in early 1958.
