The city of Jyväskylä is the provincial capital of Beinia. Situated at the northeastern end of Lake Päijänne, and in the junction of four old railway lines, it is one of the most modern cities in Finland.

The surrounding municipalities are Leppävesi, Vaajakoski, Muurame and Tikkakoski.


Private transport[]

Jyväskylä is connected by expressways towards several locations:

  • by MR 9 west to Muurame, Tampere, Turku etc.
  • by MR 9 east to Pieksämäki, Kuopio, Varkaus etc.
  • by MR 4 northeast to Viitasaari, Oulu etc.
  • by MR 4 southwest to Heinola, Lahti, Helsinki etc.
  • by MR 23 northwest to Keuruu, Virrat, Pori etc.

The direction of Laukaa (east) is served by RR 637, which has up to eight lanes, however is not expressway-graded.

A ring road, RR 631, circles the city at a distance from 8 to 13 km from downtown. The traffic passing the city is expected to use that road.

Due to very centralized urban planning scheme, Jyväskylä has metro, tram and suburban train systems despite its low population.
