History[]

The history of rail traffic in Kuopio began in 1868, as a railway was built connecting Helsinki to Kuopio through Porvoo, Kouvola and Mikkeli. First, there was only one daily pair of trains stopping frequently (after departure from Kuopio, at Rättimäki, Kolmisoppi, Vääränlahti...)

The railway was extended to Puijonlinna (Päiväranta) in 1870, and over Lake Kallavesi to Iisalmi in 1886. Due to difficult terrain, the original railway had mainly only one track, and bypassed several hills and lakes.

  • 1868: railway Suonenjoki-Kuopio built, 2 tracks Rastunkylä-Pitkälahti, otherwise 1 track
  • 1870: railway Kuopio-Puijonlinna built, 2 tracks

Future development[]

There will be changes in January 2010, when the new railway from Ritisenlahti to Humalajoki will open. A new line H is scheduled to run between Humalajoki and Itkonniemi. The new stations are Pihlaisenkylä, Pöksänjoki, Kumpuspuro and Humalajoki.

The extension of this railway, from Humalajoki to Leppävirta (connecting to the Inner Savonian Railway) is due to be completed in 2012. New stations are Humalamäki, Pykärinkylä, Paukamäki, Paukarlahti, Paalimäki, Lahnanen, Arkkuselkä, Ollinsalmi, Palokangas, Sorvalahti, Jyrkkiinmäki and Leppävirta.

An "angular" railway connecting Pöksä on southern railway, Pöksänjoki on the future Humalajoki-Leppävirta railway and Kurkimäki on the western railway, is due to be completed in 2016. It will be continued to Lievonselkä by 2020.

Meanwhile, there is a fifth parallel railway track under construction between Kurkimäki and Pitkälahti, as well as the seventh between Pitkälahti and Itkonniemi. When this is ready, there will be new rush hour lines:
