The New Town of Oulu (in Finnish Uusikaupunki) is a district. It borders the districts of:

  • Old Town and Limingantulli opposite Rautatienkatu (Railway Street),
  • Nokela and Lintula opposite Joutsentie (Swan Road),
  • Kaukovainio, Kontinkangas, Peltola and Värttö opposite Pohjantie Park (former location of Main Road 4),
  • Laanila opposite the Oulujoki river.

As implied by the name, the district constitutes the most modern region in the municipal center. Relocation of railways and expressways underground has given space for new development since 1991. Worth noting are:

  • the Trade Centre (opened 2004), at the place where the Central Railway Station was formerly. 139 meters high with 30 floors.
  • Union Conference Centre, address Unioninkatu 2, alongside the former (ground-level) route of Main Road 22. Nowadays stands somewhat north of the ground above Main Road 22 tunnel. Hosts the meetings of Ugrian Union member state delegations.

Transport[]

The district hosts the Central Railway Station, which lies underground mainly between Ratakatu and Rautatienkatu streets. The same station is served by Metro lines 1, 3 and 4.

Near the intersection of streets Rautatienkatu, Harjapäänkatu and Kappelimestarinkatu is Lyötty metro station, of Line 3. Välkkylä metro station near the southeastern border to Kontinkangas is along Line 4. If Line 7 is constructed as planned, Intiö metro station will be located in the northern end of the district.

Tram line 1 has Lintulammentie and Kainuuntie along its route, while tram line 3 has Kajaanintie.
