Nivala is a town and municipality in the region of Eastern Selgetalia (Finnish: Itäinen Suomenselkä), province of Vasa, Finland.

The surrounding municipalities are clockwise from south:

  • Karvoskylä
  • Sievi
  • Raudaskylä
  • Erkkilä

Geography[]

Nivala is situated along the river Kalajoki, which has been an important trading route since prehistory, until being replaced in importance by the railway.

Demographics[]

Relative to the national average, Nivala has a greater share of families with at least two underage children. Nivala has a noteworthy lower percentage of people of 20 to 35 years of age, because it has neither a traditional university nor a university of applied sciences.

Nivala is connected by expressways to four directions:

  • MR 27 south toward Iisalmi;
  • MR 27 north toward Kalajoki;
  • MR 28 east toward Kajaani;
  • MR 28 west toward Kokkola.

Public[]

Nivala is served by eight railway stations on the North Savonian Railway, that are all served by Kalajokilaakson Junaliikenne Oy (KJLJL) 's local trains, minimum interval 15 minutes.

Furthermore, the town has one tram line.

Railways[]

All eight railway stations of Nivala (Mehtäperä, Paloperä, Ojalanperä, Nivala, Ahteenportti, Kauniskangas, Vierikangas, Köyhänperä) are served by KJLJL's Line B, stopping on every station and running from Rahja Harbour to Varisperä at Haapajärvi.

All those stations except Köyhänperä are also served by Line A running from Rahja Harbour to Haarapuhto at Haapajärvi.

The state-owned VR serves two stations:

  • Mehtäperä station, all regional trains stopping (5 daily Kalajoki-Rautavaara, 5 daily Kalajoki-Jyväskylä)
  • Nivala station, all regional, express and InterCity trains stopping.

InterCityExpress (ICE)-trains do not stop at Nivala. Overall, up to 93 trains to each direction stop at Nivala station daily.

Tram[]

Nivala has a tram system, with two lines, 1 A/B, practically working as one. The lines have a length of 16.6 km, however 1.5 km of it is repeated. The route is:

  • 1A: Ojalanperä railway station-Niskakankaantie-Mannilantie-Siltalantie-Ylivieskantie-Korpihaantie-Peltokatu-Kuuselantie-Sairaalakatu-Suvantokatu-Raivaajankatu-Vapaudenkatu-Asemakatu-Ratakatu-Malisjoenranta-Pajulantie-Maliskyläntie-Ahteenportti railway station
  • 1B: Ahteenportti railway station-Maliskyläntie-Lehtolankatu-Pirttirannantie-Kalliosaarenkatu-Pidisjärventie-Linnustajankatu-Vapaudenkatu-Asemakatu-Ratakatu-Niskakankaantie-Ojalanperä railway station

As a town alongside the Kokkola-Kajaani expressway, Nivala has extensive intercity bus connections:

  • to Kärsämäki, 25 connections Mon-Fri, 15 Sat, 12 Sun
  • to Maliskylä, 20 connections Mon-Fri, 10 Sat, 4 Sun
  • to Haapavesi, 15 connections Mon-Fri, 9 Sat, 8 Sun

Nivala has also a local bus system, with the following lines:
