[1][2]The Republic of Los Santos is a sovereign island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. The country has a population of approximately 4 million, almost all living in the capital, Los Santos.
History[]
For most of its recorded history, the island now known as Los Santos was called San Andreas. First colonised by Spain in the 1580s, the island served as an important Pacific outpost for more than two centuries. In 1806, during conflict between European powers, the United Kingdom captured San Andreas from Spain.
In 1891, San Andreas was formally transferred to the United States, becoming an American island territory. Under U.S. rule, the island—later popularly called Los Santos Island—experienced major urban growth, industrial development, and heavy military presence.
Rising nationalism and economic grievances in the early 2000s led to a push for independence. A referendum held in 2008 saw 3.1 million out of 3.5 million voters supporting sovereignty.
On 1 January 2010, the island officially declared independence as the Republic of Los Santos. The historic name San Andreas was retired, and Los Santos became the nation’s internationally recognised name.
Michael De Santa became the first President, with Franklin Clinton as Prime Minister and General Trevor Phillips appointed Chief of the Armed Forces.
Politics[]
The Republic of Los Santos operates as an authoritarian oligarchy. President De Santa, Prime Minister Clinton, and General Phillips share absolute power. Political parties are outlawed, and no formal legislature exists.
All laws must be unanimously approved by the ruling triumvirate.
Foreign Relations[]
The nation is a member of the United Nations and maintains embassies in Australia, the United States, Russia, Japan, India, and the United Kingdom.
Law[]
The legal system blends English Common Law, Spanish Law, and American Law. The judiciary is not fully independent and may be overridden by directives from the ruling triumvirate.
The death penalty is legal for crimes such as murder, treason, and terrorism. Executions are typically carried out by firing squad.
Security[]
Law enforcement is carried out by the Los Santos Highway Patrol, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Los Santos Police Department. The National Office for Security Enforcement (NOOSE) manages counterterrorism.
