The main island has the tallest hill, Talumak at 533 m MSL, 318 m over the surface of the lake.

History[]

Most of its history, the islanders have got their living from fishing and agriculture. All changed in 1922, when the provincial council decided to build two 1.2 km long bridges, one connecting mainland at Ydonjas to Beckkessuor, the other connecting Beckkessuor to Sorsuor. The first bridge was finished in 1930, the second in 1935.

The Sorsuor Bridge reached the main island near Besitebyk village, which was situated 6 km away from the municipal center, but became now the gateway to mainland. Plans were made immediately to build a new center near Besitebyk. New municipal bureau building was completed in 1942 and a new Christian church in 1950. The Catameilist temple (built in the 12th century) is still in the old town.

A railway between Kutuddif and Sorsuor was completed in 1972. In 1991, a bridge between Avernjas and Beckkessuor decreased distances to Kutufjarp West Coast. In 2002, the main island was connected to Halasuor.

In recent times, Sorsuor has experienced a construction boom. New residential buildings are built into the urban areas, as well as summer cottages on the coastline.

Demographics[]

In 2005, Sorsuor had a population of ~6,400, but in summer there may be more than 15,000 inhabitants.

The urban areas are the new center (3,900) and the old center (2,200). The rural areas of the main island have a population of 200, while a hundred people live on the other islands.

The Mekkersuor islands are a military area, occupied by 100-200 soldiers. Jiop-Mekkersuor is only 800 meters away from the Cardobian border.

Transport[]

The terminus of Sorsuor-Kutuddif railway is in the municipal center.

Regional road 420 from Kutuddif ends up in the center, from where local roads 4207, 4208 and 4209 go to Mekkernjas (19 km), old town (6 km) and Halasuor (17 km), respectively.
