The Warrior Class[]

Knights[]

The primary "hard points" of a typical Lorican army are the knights, men riding horseback with either an aristocratic background or, lacking that, at least coming from gentry. Lorica has some 50,000 knights. Knights can usually afford upscale plate, and are equipped with lances and other polearms/poleaxes, swords and maces.

Men-At-Arms[]

The kingdoms of Lorica usually have a relatively small core elite force of well-trained, full-time professional soldiers comprising a standing army. In times of peace this force numbers roughly 500,000, or 0.5% of the world's population. The vast majority of these are infantry and in times of peace, serve as the local guard, and as escorts for nobility. Soldiers of this caliber usually are men-at-arms and are outfitted with mail, with limited access to plate. Weaponry include sword, polearm/poleaxe, battleaxe and mace.

Footmen[]

In times of war, the nobility conscripts a great many additional recruits to add as basic infantry. Such footmen usually are armored with only leather and other hide armors, with limited access to even rudimentary mail. Footmen usually fight with bow, spear and axe. Archers will usually come from the ranks of footmen. Wars usually do not cross into more than one or two borders, and usually do not have a tremendous impact on the rest of Lorica. In most cases conscription for a war effort pulls in about 150,000 to 400,000 footmen. However, should people in most kingdoms in the world become conscripted, at a ratio of 2% of the world's population, this may amount to an additional 2,000,000 soldiers.

Magic[]

Note that while there are offensive spellcasters in Lorica, the vast majority of warriors are of the mundane variety, and use medieval weaponry (ie. sans gunpowder), up to and including cavalry, full plate, longbows, and crossbows.
